 GlebeBLOG
NEW YEAR UPDATE

Here on Glebe Farm, we have had a very busy 2008.  A few new animals have joined us - we now have five alpacas since we took on two "retired" females in Autumn 2008.  Gossamer and Daisy are both white and Gossamer has the most amazing blue eyes.  They have certainly put the boys in their place, although Paco, Chico and Bebe don't seem to mind too much!

We had fun with lots of ducklings hatching in 2008 and now have 5 pairs of assorted colour call ducks - from white to chocolate.   We still have Dusty, Sylvie and Sapphire who are the proud mums.  None of our birds have their wings clipped, so it's quite a sight to see the ducks flying from the field and paddocks into our garden.  They were a bit bemused a week or so ago, when we had such a cold snap as the frozen duck pond threw them into confusion.  They ended up content with regularly refreshed washing up bowls of water for a few days until the pond defrosted.

Roxie our collie is now 16 months old and a real delight.  She loves company and thinks anyone who comes to the door has come to visit her.  She is a fantastic jumper and amused us all leaping over gates and fences until unfortunately at the beginning of December, she got a back leg caught in a gate mid-jump and subsequently damaged ligaments in her leg.  She's recuperating slowly, and having to rest up.  She's not enjoying being housebound except for two 10 minute walks a day.  Hopefully she'll be up to speed in a couple of months or so.

The Shetland Ponies are going strong and Willow is certainly the most boisterous.  She regularly entertains us during feeding by barging everything else (including us!) out of the way of any type of food.  We have to keep an eye on her!

Our three black rock chickens and our ex-bats are still going strong, producing lots of lovely eggs and have been joined by five blue Maran chickens.  This new brood have very different personalities and have been another new challenge.  Our black rocks and ex-bats are so laid back and relaxed and happy to stay close to the roost, but the Marans being so young, are keen to investigate and explore further afield.  Not so good for us as their favourite ruse is to get into the vegetable garden and dig up anything that gets planted.  I've got David working on a solution for that one!

Our female rabbits Rachel and Phoebe had an unexpected visit from Joey following some serious tunnel digging - resulting in 11 bunnies just in time for Christmas!  We are just starting to re-home them, but no doubt will end up with keeping a couple, just because they are so cute.  Preventing further break outs is another maintenance job to add to the list when it's a bit warmer.

Jax with Pots'n'Paints has been busy working alongside many parent and toddler groups running up to the Christmas period which had the kiln heaving.  Countless plates, mugs, vases and Christmas decorations with toddlers and babies hand and foot prints were wrapped up and put under Christmas trees in North Devon and beyond.  What a lovely thought seeing grandparents faces on Christmas morning.  The business has been steadily growing and now deserves it s own website.  Please log onto www.potsnpaintsonline.co.uk and let us know what you think!

We've all but finished painting the outside of the house, so 2009 sees Glebe Farmhouse and Cottage both painted in a warm shade of cream and green.   I think there were about 18 wooden window frames to do!  Certainly looks better for the new coat of paint.
